The title character, Brat Farrar, is a young man recently returned to England from America. What colour is a lilac when you are not looking at it, Brat Farrar book wonder? The reader is in on the double-cross of the identity of Brat Farrar as he tries to dupe the family of Patrick Ashby. Since then, the Ashbys have been short of money. However, he struggles to find a way to reveal the murderer without cutting his ties to the family which he has come to love. Bill and his wife Nora died eight years before.
At any rate, throughout Brat Farrar, Tey writes the texture of this small, known, family place, with its quiet and rich history, really well. The Brat Farrar book character, Brat Farrar, is a young man recently returned to England from America. At the end of the novel, the Ashbys accept him into the family on his own account. On a street in London, someone completely unknown to Brat greets him as "Simon". It was a wonderful read.
Ruth, on the other hand, wore a pink cotton frock, as fresh as when she had set off on her bicycle that morning for the Rectory. I was amazed at how quickly I was sucked into the drama. My favorite is Aunt Bee. Whereabouts was Firelight in the Free Handicap, do you remember? The Ashby family has had more than its share of tragedy.

The fact that Simon Ashby has been cruel and self-absorbed for most of his life is explained away again and again by those closest to him. He's quite frankly not what I expected.
Walter turns out to be Brat's father. Into this benign family picture, a small bomb is dropped in the person of Brat Farrar himself. At Brat Farrar book everybody believed that Brat indeed was Patrick, by the simple reason that he had learned Brat Farrar book the things which Patrick rather liked and which he did not from the outside.

So it becomes a matter of which pain, and how much, he has to inflict upon them, because no matter what, his agreeing to enter into the deception sets up a load of hurt down the road. Sandal the family solicitor try to determine if Brat is actually Patrick or not. Brat comes along just before his Patrick's 21st birthday and when he is due to inherit the family's estate.
Dead Person Impersonation : Brat impersonates Patrick Ashby, who the family assumed committed suicide years earlier. Their centuries-old family estate is Latchetts, in the fictional village of Clare, near the south coast of England.
I will say here and now that I do not believe that ending with Eleanor at all. The novel was loosely adapted in by Hammer Films as Paranoiacwith some of the details changed: the Ashbys are wealthy by other means with no money problems, and no need to raise horses; the impostor who plays Tony is not a long-lost cousin; nor does the character of Uncle Charles appear in the film.
I like the writing style and atmosphere. Would Bill and Nora be pleased with what she had made of their children?
